Transfer from Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra to Phnom Penh Airport is only included for this flight.

Meet your driver in the Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra hotel lobby and begin your overland transfer to Siem Reap, home to the world-renowned temples of Angkor. The journey takes approximately 5 hours, where you stop at the Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium for lunch. Enjoy a traditional Khmer set menu served in a charming open-air garden setting.

After lunch, continue to Tonle Sap Lake, about a 30-minute drive away. Arrive at Kampong Phluk around 14:30 hrs. The village is actually a cluster of three villages of stilted houses built within the floodplain of the Tonle Sap. The villages are primarily Khmer and have about 3000 inhabitants between them. Flooded mangrove forest surrounds the area and is home to a variety of wildlife. Enjoy an intriguing boat trip through the village and its mangroves and learn more about this exceptional way of life. Continue with an overland transfer to the hotel for check in at 16:30 hrs. Take some time to settle in and freshen up.

Siem Reap is Cambodia’s third biggest town and is the gateway to the temples of Angkor. With a scenic river and many different night markets and a pub street, the city’s atmosphere is very pleasant. In the late afternoon at 17:30 hrs, you will be met by your guide and tuktuk (the local means of transportation where a motorbike pulls a small carriage for up to 4 people) and join for a ride to the central part of town. First visit
Satcha, a beautiful place where local artisans show you in a very laidback and open setting their craft and techniques. Continue to Wat Damnak, one of the most famous pagodas in town. If time allows, youmay partake in a monk blessing that will bless your travels through Angkor and back home. Continue for dinner at a restaurant nearby at 19:30 hrs. After dinner you may opt to walk around the Old Market, Pub Street, or night markets. Choose to stay in the central area for some late night drinks (excluded), or return by tuktuk to the hotel.

NOTE:  In case you opt to stay in central Siem Reap for drinks or shopping, the cost of the tuktuk to return to the hotel needs to be negotiated with the driver. Usually this is about USD 1,- per person.

Alternative transfer option: Instead of taking the overland transfer from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, you may opt to take a flight to Siem Reap at your own expense. Transfer from Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra to the Phnom Penh Airport and from Siem Reap Airport to the Angkor Wildlife & Aquarium for lunch are included.

Day 02 - TEMPLES of ANGKOR

Start at 08:00 hrs with a visit to Angkor Wat, which dates back to the first half of the 12th century. King Suryavarman II constructed this magnificent masterpiece and built it to become the largest religious monument in the world. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, reliefs and sculptures make it one of the finest in the world. This temple is an expression of Khmer art at its highest point of development. It took in its entirety roughly 30 years to construct Angkor Wat.

Continue to Ta Prohm, which is considered to be the most photographed temple within the Angkor complex. Constructed in the Bayon style between the late 12th and early 13th century, Ta Prohm was left pretty much untouched by archaeologists. The trees that grow out of the ruins allow for a mysterious feeling filled with photogenic opportunities. King Jayavarman VII constructed the temple as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university and it is estimated that close to 80.000 people resided at the temple. Afterwards, transfer by tuktuk to Sras Srang where lunch is served at a local restaurant.

After lunch, visit the former capital of the Angkor Kingdom, Angkor Thom, which translates to “Great City”. The city covers an area of 9km² in which numerous breath-taking monuments were built. The South Gate offers the grandest access to the city where the Victory Gate grants access on the East side, leaving the East Gate, which is also known as the Gate of the Death beautifully untouched in a very quiet part of the complex. The centrepiece of the city is the Bayon. Its most distinctive features are the 216 serene stone faces that seemingly face all directions. The Baphuon and Phimeanakas are structures built in the 11th and 10th century respectively and both were built in the pyramid style. The Terrace of the Elephants is a 300 meters long terrace that has three main platforms and two subsidiary ones. The south stairway is framed with three-head elephants gathering lotus flowers with their trunks. The central stairway is decorated by lions and Garuda’s in bas-reliefs in a stance of support for the stairways. One of the main attractions of this terrace is the facade decorated with elephants and their riders depicted in profile. Likewise, the Terrace of Leper King was constructed in the 12th century. The curious name of this terrace refers to a statue of the Leper King that is on the platform of the terrace.

Return to town and remain free and freshen up before your driver meets you to bring you for dinner at 19:00 hrs at an authentic local restaurant of a young fusion chef who has prepared a lovely degustation of Khmer fusion dishes for you.

* Note: Order of visits depends on the preference of the client and how busy the temples are. Smaller temples not from the A list can be visited if time allows. The excursion is done by tuktuks, 2 people per tuktuk.

After breakfast, enjoy some free time and make use of the facilities of the hotel, head back to the Old Market for some souvenir hunting or visit any of the other beautiful pagodas in town, like Wat Bo.

Around 10:00 hrs you check out of the hotel and drive towards Beng Mealea. The drive takes about 1hr and 15min. Visit the incredible structure of Beng Mealea, which was built between the late 11th and the first half of the 12th century. It is assumed that King Suryavarman II ordered the construction of Beng Mealea, maybe even as a prototype of its larger brother; Angkor Wat, but no actual prove can be found in its depictions. The ruins of Beng Mealea are overgrown with vegetation, allowing a real “wilderness experience.” In recent years a wooden pathway has been constructed throughout the temple to allow people to observe the beauty of the temple in ease. However, most people venture of the beaten track and find their own way through the temple allowing them to experience the feeling the first explorers must have felt when they uncovered this magnificent structure. Lunch is served in a local restaurant nearby.

After lunch, continue to transfer to Phnom Penh or transfer to Siem Reap Airport (only for the recommended flight to P{hnom Penh). It takes about 5 hours to reach the capital again, where you will be dropped at your preferred location: Financial district (Phnom Penh north, Russian Market Phnom Penh South, or Sofitel Phnom Penh).

NOTE: Instead of taking the overland transfer from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh, you may opt to take a flight back to Phnom Penh at your own expense.
